Emma peeked her head through the back door of the girls’ locker room hoping no one would see her. When she was sure the coast was clear, she stepped out into the fresh morning air. She planned to go to the library for the period and find a good book to read. Reading was one of Emma’s hobbies and she always had her nose in a book whenever possible.
She sneaked through the hallway. Not long after she had been there a janitor only a few feet away was mopping the floor. She turned and ran the other way before he had a chance to see her. When she turned the next corner of the hallway she stepped cautiously taking care not to run into any janitors or teachers that time.
She made it to the library within a minute and headed directly for the fiction section. She skimmed through some of the books on one shelf not looking for anything in particular. When nothing struck her interest she went down the next aisle skimming more titles.
She was so absorbed in trying to find a good book that she didn’t even notice that someone was standing beside her. “Don’t I know you from somewhere?” a voice asked.
Emma looked up from the shelf. Standing in front of her was one of the most gorgeous guys she had ever seen. He was tall with shaggy brown hair and beautiful green eyes.
“Um no,” she answered with a hint of nervousness in her voice. Where had she seen this guy before? He looked so familiar.
For a second he seemed to be puzzled. “Isn’t your name Emma or something?”
“Yeah actually,” she replied beaming, wondering and slightly not caring how he knew her name. “I just transferred here from New York.”
“We’ve never met before but my friend Zoë tells me she’s your twin.”
She nodded. “Yeah but I don’t think we’re at all related. We don’t even have the same last name.” She looked away nervously, skimming again at the books on the nearby shelf.
“Well it’s nice to meet you. My name is Ricky.”
“You’re in the band with Zoë aren’t you?” She relaxed a bit, realizing that she sort of already knew this guy.
“Yeah,” he replied. “I play the drums. I started a couple of years ago. It came as a hobby for a long time and then Jerome told me his friend Brian was starting a band so we both joined.”
“That’s so cool,” she commented.
“So what are you in here for? I’ve never seen you in study hall this period.”
“I just came here because I don’t want to go to P.E.,” she admitted.
“Ditching class?” he joked. “You’re such a rebel. I shouldn’t hang around you. You’re a terrible influence.”
She glanced down at the book he was holding. “What about you?” she continued the joke. “Reading about aliens. I should probably run for cover before you abduct me from the planet.”
“Nah,” he said grinning. “I’ll just make you go back to your gym class. Attack of the killer dodge balls.”
“Uck,” she made a face. “Don’t remind me. I hate dodge ball. Anything that involves throwing a fast ball toward my face, count me out.”
“I know what you mean,” he said. “I don’t like sports much either.”
“These days it seems like everybody’s on a school team.”
“I guess were just two odd balls,” he smiled.
“Yeah,” she agreed not knowing what else to say but knowing her cheeks were probably turning pink before his eyes.
“Listen,” he said. “I have to get back to class and turn in this report for English,” he held up two type written sheets of paper. “But maybe I’ll see you around later.” He grinned at her and she caught the flirtatious gleam in his enticing green eyes.
“All right. See you later,” replied Emma. She couldn’t stop grinning as she watched Ricky’s lean figure exit the library‘s double doors. She certainly hoped she would see him again and soon.
