Brett gunned his car’s engine and sat motionless for about two minutes. He knew why he was here. He knew what he had to do. But he just didn’t know if he could do it. What if things didn’t happen the way he wanted them to? He ran his sweaty palms over the steering wheel and looked up.
Claire, his ex-girlfriend was standing in front of his car. Her long blonde hair was tied in a loose ponytail, shimmying down the length of her back. She was wearing black high heels, short denim shorts, and a sleeveless flannel blouse so tight, it squeezed her torso. She held a black and white checkered cloth in her hand, her flag to signal the start of the race. She was about to wave it when Brett caught her eye. She winked at him and he made note of how sexy she looked as the wind cascaded through her hair.
He checked his watch which read 8:29 pm. There wasn’t much time left. Brett gripped the wheel so tightly that his knuckles were white. Then he remembered that he didn’t have to hold on for dear life. He turned his head as his buddy Rick who was in the car next to him, gave him a thumbs up. Brett took a deep breath.
Claire finally waved the flag and he pressed down on the gas pedal. He gave his buddy one last look hoping that it wouldn’t be the last time he saw him alive. Rick’s image blurred past him like a wave in an ocean.
Brett held his breath hoping that this time he would be able to save Rick…
